Hesitant Alien (Gerard Way) | 4.5/5
SINGAPORE - It’s ironic that the frontman of My Chemical Romance has now come up with a debut LP that only demonstrates how vital the power-pop genre can be. I have never been a fan of MCR and its emo-pop-punk agenda but Gerard Way deserves all the kudos for this amazing debut solo album that channels all of the finest pop-rock of the ’70s and ’80s. Right from the opening salvo of the Big Star - referencing The Bureau (that intro borrows wonderfully from Feel), the infectious Action Cat (Cheap Trick-meets-Weezer) and the spot-on T-Rex glam-grooving No Shows, Way pays tribute to the classic rock music he grew up to with much aplomb and with a stroke of genius elevates his status to essential rock ‘n’ roll master.
