Holler (Girls’ Generation-TTS) | 3/5

SINGAPORE - When it comes to Asian pop music, it’s sometimes the off-shoots that sound better than their “parent groups”. That’s certainly the case for Hebe Tien, whose solo work is more daring than any track that S.H.E. have put out. And the same can be said of TTS (also referred to as Girls’ Generation-TTS or TaeTiSeo). The three girls from the hugely popular Girls’ Generation - Tiffany, Taeyeon and Seohyun - have developed a whole new fan base with their hip-hop-inflected tracks (which is pretty different from the cute pop sound of Girls’ Generation). The trio shared that they handpicked all the songs and wanted this sophomore mini album to showcase a “much more raw side of our music” and it appears that they have done so. There’s the R&B-infused title track and Whisper; the perky Adrenaline (with its shades of Britney Spears) and Eyes; they offer something spunky with Stay; and the almost-TLC sounding Only U (which features lyrics by Seohyun) is probably one of the best track these girls have done thus far. Thing is, all of the songs probably wouldn’t make the cut on any Girls’ Generation outing, but this only makes Holler a refreshing offering for those who want something a little familiar, but also different.
