The Kingdom (Alarice) | 2.5/5

SINGAPORE - Singer-songwriter Alarice’s new EP, The Kingdom, was produced in Nashville by Cody Norris and Ed Cash, and contains songs that are clearly in the Contemporary Christian Music genre. This will appeal largely to a Christian audience and it’s all well and good, but one might ask what relevance songs like Sing Hallelujah and Conqueror might have for rest of the public. Of course, one could also make the same arguments about the music of Bob Marley, but at least Marley addressed wider themes like social injustice and human rights abuses in his music. Despite the somewhat exclusive lyrics, on all other counts - songwriting, performance and production values - this is competent mainstream pop music. Certainly, Alarice is fully entitled to sing and write about the issues that affect her personally (and she does that well enough) but as is, The Kingdom will only resonate with listeners of the Christian faith. But then, maybe that’s the point of it all. See Alarice perform tunes from The Kingdom at TAB on March 29 (www.tab.com.sg).
