Language & Perspective (Bad Suns) | 3/5

SINGAPORE — The band’s official bio mentions that Southern California rock band Bad Suns has “grown musically beyond their years”. The members — Christo Bowman (vocals), Gavin Bennett (bass), Miles Morris (drums) and Ray Libby (guitar) — are aged 19 to 22. To be brutally honest, I hear nothing that would suggest that Bad Suns are any different from their post-punk revivalist peers. But how much you get out of this album depends very much on your bias. If you are the same age as these youngsters and your listening habits don’t go beyond 2012, then this album is for you. To be fair, this debut full-length is highly listenable, with enough catchy melodies, hooks and rhythms (eg Cardiac Arrest and Take My Love And Run) to keep things interesting. It’s not the best that the post-punk revival scene has to offer but it’s definitely not the worst. Worth investigating if you dig bands like Travis, Coldplay, The Strokes and The Killers and commercial indie pop in general.
