Parade On (Doug Gillard) | 3.5/5

SINGAPORE - Indie rock fans from the ’90s will remember Doug Gillard as a member of Guided By Voices in the latter part of the decade. Since then, Gillard has sporadically released solo albums in between his session work for such indie luminaries as Nada Surf. The sparkling new album Parade On is Gillard’s first solo full-length work since 2009’s Call From Restricted and the fine music on display is well worth the wait. From the moment the jingle-jangle folk-rock of the opening - and cheeringly titled - Ready For Death, it’s clear that a splendid time will be had for classic pop-rock lovers. The rest of Parade On is not quite as immediate as that opening sweet sonic assault; but on the Pete Townshend-channelling Come Out And Show Me, the mellifluous Oh My Little Girl and the rollicking Angel X, Gillard sure comes close enough.
