When The Night (St Lucia) | 3.5/5

SINGAPORE — This is the first full-length album by St Lucia — essentially just South African musician Jean-Philip Grobler, who ropes in a few friends when he performs live. For some reason, his songs take a while to get going: Most of them start off with quite a bit of instrumentation. Apparently he’s influenced by artists from the ’80s — Peter Gabriel and Fleetwood Mac are mentioned in his bio — and you can certainly hear that in his music, on winning tracks such as Closer Than This and Too Close are. There’s a fair bit of synthesizer sounds on this album, and you can almost picture the likes of Howard Jones singing these tunes. Grobler also produced the album and he has shared the stage with the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and Fun, but you’ll love this if you miss the electronic sounds of the ’80s.
