SINGAPORE - Out of all the K-popsters that have emerged from the land that gave us kimchi, ginseng chicken, bulgogi and bibimbap, the one that has always piqued my interest is 2NE1.

Why? Mostly because they show some spunk and don’t look like the other cookie-cutter girl groups (and you can actually tell who is who - haha).

At any rate, Yang Hyun Suk, the big boss man at YG Entertainment - 2NE1’s management company - put a post out regarding the new album by 2NE1.

Called Crush, it comprises 10 songs, with nine new tracks - one song was previously released in Japan. According to Yang, it will drop at midnight on Feb 24 on online music sites and the album “will go on sale offline the following week” (that means in stores, people). He also mentioned the music video for the lead single, which is “an MV with the largest budget for the group”, will feature a tonne of CGI. A teaser video will be unveiled first on Feb 24, and then a completed version on Feb 28.

“The part that you have to really look at in 2NE1’s new album is that CL, the leader, included whopping three songs that are self-written and composed for the first time in her life (sic),” wrote Yang. “You are the ones to judge the quality of her music. But when I first listened to CL’s very own song, the one word that described my feeling was ‘surprised’ ... I have known CL for 8 years and I never expected her to produce a song like this, and the song was too good to be her very first one.”

He mentioned that he thought it was “unfortunate” that 2NE1 had few opportunities in the past to promote their music, and promised that 2NE1 will do more this year, adding that CL’s new solo album ought to be out “before this year ends”.

The girls will perform these new songs for time at their Seoul concerts on March 1 and 2 (and there’s an after party that ticketholders are privy to), so if you’re there and going for those shows, look out for these new tracks. Further details on 2NE1’s title song and the track lists will be announced in the near future.
