SINGAPORE - Local singer Reuby Tan took home the country’s first award at the recent Hong Kong Asian-Pop Music Festival (HKAMF) last Friday (March 27), making it the first time a Singaporean representative has won an award at the festival since it started in 2011.

The 19-year-old singer captured 37 per cent of the total votes cast online - besting the seven other contestants including the Hong Kong’s own Jay Fung - to win the Viewers Popularity Award, aka LeTV’s Top Pick Award, which is based on public voting. At the festival, Reuby sang his original composition, Fifty, inspired by the best-selling novel and film adaptation, Fifty Shades Of Grey.

“I didn’t really expect to get it. I was kind of surprised,” he said over the phone. “I was extremely nervous and I felt pressured at first ... because

I’d never done something on that scale before and I didn’t know what it would be like. I was anxious about how I would do against other strong competitors around the region. But on the actual day of the show, I really enjoyed myself.”

Reuby dedicated his win to the memory of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. “Like every other Singaporean, I was pretty affected by his passing,” he said. “I had learnt a brief history of what he’d done for Singapore; but last week when he passed, I read a lot the newspaper articles and I was really inspired by him. I felt really proud to be a Singaporean. So when I was in Hong Kong, I wanted to win something for Singapore and to dedicate it to him.”

“This award ... in many ways was made possible through what he had done for Singapore. I hope I would have made our founding father proud. I hope I made Singapore proud.”

Reuby, whose debut album was out last September, also said he’s currently working on some new material, although he has no plans to put them together for another album just yet. “I’m always writing new songs and music and I’m hoping to present this to the label and I hope they’ll like. But right now, I’m still focussed on pushing my current album and getting as far a reach for this album as possible.”

Knowing that he is an audience favourite in Hong Kong, will he be making plans to head back there? “That’s within our plans, but we don’t have anything confirmed yet. I look forward to going back, though.”
