SINGAPORE — Singapore’s top pop princess Stefanie Sun released her latest musical effort on Wednesday (Aug 17). Called Rainbow Bot, the track is exclusively available on Apple Music and is also the title track of her new five-track EP, which will be released on Friday.

The theme of the EP is centred around nature and “how it is best to be one with it”.

“When I was young, my father often brought us out to the Botanic Gardens. It is a paradise that is filled with the secrets of childhood memories,” she recalled.

This EP is also a bit of a walk down memory lane for Sun. Three of the tracks on the EP are covers of songs that Sun heard when she was younger: Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 hit Sweet Child O’ Mine; a childhood tune called Nursery Rhyme 1987; and This World, by the late Taiwanese singer Tsai Lan-chin.

The last is an updated version of Kepler, the title track from her 2014 album.

Once again collaborating with her long-time musical partner Kenn C, the instrumentation on the EP is more experimental and slightly different from the usual Stefanie Sun sound.

For instance, on Sweet Child O’ Mine, she eschews the original hard and heavy instrumentation for something a little more fresh and lightweight — using ukulele, trumpet, tambourine, for example — which gives it a more “fun atmosphere”.

This willingness to open up the musical palette can also be heard on the other trackss. As the singer said: “Open your heart and use all your love, so that you can give to this world a little more colour.”

As yet, the single and EP will only be offered on digital platforms. According to Universal Music, there are not plans as yet to make physical copies of the EP.
