LOS ANGELES — During a worldwide live stream on Monday, pop star Taylor Swift announced that she was releasing her first official pop album, titled 1989, on Oct 27. She also debuted her new song, Shake It Off.

Swift also released the music video for the upbeat new single at the event.

“I woke up not wanting but needing to make a new style of music,” said the songstress.

The singer had been dropping plenty of hints via Twitter before Monday’s Yahoo/ABC live stream in New York, and went so far as to say that 1989 is her “favourite album I’ve ever made”.

While previous songs from Swift have been considered pop, her albums still qualified her for honours at awards shows such as the Country Music Awards.

The isn’t the first time Swift has dropped a single in such a fashion. In 2012, she released her hit We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together during a live chat on YouTube. The singer re-teamed with Max Martin and Shellback, who wrote and produced We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, for Shake It Off.

Swift will be performing at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday, and can also be seen in The Giver, which hit bowed last weekend. REUTERS
