TV host Lee Teng sings live at Sundown Festival

SINGAPORE – As a teenager, television host Lee Teng loved frequenting karaoke outlets and singing his heart out. Except, he could not sing.

“During my secondary school days, when I went to KTV, there were many songs that I couldn’t sing well,” the 33-year-old Taiwan native shared.

“It’s very frustrating when you always sing out of tune and out of pitch,” said Lee, who added that he used to feel envious of others who sang well. “Wah, how do they sing a high note. I really wanted to sing as well with them.”

So, as soon as he started working in show business, he decided to hire a vocal coach to improve his singing.

And now, 10 years later, Lee has launched his first single and even took to the stage to sing live at this year’s Sundown Festival on Saturday (Aug 5).

Before his appearance at the festival, Lee told TODAY he was “a little nervous” as “it’s a different thing to sing live compared to a recording”.

Lee belted out his single, Fall In Love, which is a duet with Taiwanese singer Zowie Lin. “It’s about first love. It’s something we will experience once in a life time, something we will always remember and something sweet.”

Saturday’s live performance was a first for Lee, who was awarded the Best Programme Host in Star Awards 2016.

To prepare, Lee had been practicing for two hours every day, or whenever he had a chance to sing. “I will keep bugging my friends to listen to me. Whoever’s working with me (at the time),” said Lee, who is currently filming for radio show 958 Game Show with co-hosts Pornsak and Vivian Lai.

Lee revealed that he has also engaged a music teacher to coach him on singing live.

It appears his efforts have paid off.

“There’s really a adrenaline rush. And actually, on the stage, it’s totally an enjoyment and I love it a lot. I hope I can get a chance to sing again,” Lee said after his performance.

What next?

Lee said he has already begun working on a second single. “It will be more about myself and I will be writing the lyrics,” he said. His second single is expected to be released in September.

The Sundown Festival is an annual event that showcases Asian music and culture. Other performances this year included pop-rock duo Jack & Rai, singer-songwriter Ling Kai as well as up-and-coming band The Summer State.
