SINGAPORE — From hugging a stranger to buying an HDB flat to gorging ourselves silly eating our favourite Singaporean dishes, here are some suggestions from our favourite personalities on what to do to celebrate SG50 during the Jubilee Weekend and beyond.

11. FAKKAH FUZZ, COMEDIAN. “Bring your foodie friends to the sup tulang place at Beach Road and they’ll be satisfied to the bone.”

12. KENNY LECK, OWNER OF BOOKSACTUALLY. “Pay it forward. For example, say ‘thank you’ to the bus driver you see daily on your work commute, or help your colleague refill his or her water bottle when you are refilling yours.”

13. RIZMAN PUTRA, MUSICIAN, THEATRE PERFORMER, VISUAL ARTIST. “Take bus number 7 from Bedok to Clementi and enjoy the view. You can also discover the rustic side of Singapore, from Victoria Street to Geylang.”

14. SAMANTHA LO (SKL0), VISUAL ARTIST. “I recommend taking a walk through the heartlands, buying a buttercream cake at that old school bakery, maybe some liang teh from a Chinese medical shop to combat ‘heatiness’, and having a conversation with that uncle/auntie you always see at the coffeeshop. These little things are never permanent — enjoy them while they are still around.”

15. SHIGGA SHAY, RAPPER. “Watch NDP at the Padang because it’s only held there once every five years. And with our national dish — a packet of chicken rice!”

16. RATHI MENON, MISS UNIVERSE SINGAPORE 2014. “Have a home party with loads of food and drinks with your loved ones and watch the parade (on television).”

17. CYNTHIA CHUA, OWNER OF SPA ESPRIT GROUP. “I have been travelling quite a fair bit this year thus I am happy to be spending my National Day in Singapore with my family and loved ones, by getting together and enjoying a good meal. It’s a great time to remind myself how lucky I am to be a Singaporean and what my country has done for me and my family.”

18. FANDI AHMAD, LIONSXII COACH. “The LionsXII will have a game against Pahang the day before National Day, so hopefully we can win and bring extra joy to Singaporeans celebrating National Day the next day!”

19. JACKSON TAN, ARTIST AND SG50 LOGO DESIGNER. “I would like to celebrate National Day with my friends and family, most probably having a celebration at home to watch the NDP, with lots of yummy local food, and crack jokes about the policemen in shorts. It is really meaningful for me as a designer to get a chance to create the symbol that represents our collective journey together in the last 50 years.”

20. PANN LIM, PRESIDENT DESIGN AWARD 2014 WINNER. “My family and I will probably be doing art together and launching a family ’zine based on our love for Singapore this week. To me, 49 is as good as 50 and, of course, 51 is even better. In short, the same way every National Day should be celebrated as the year before because it’s a mark of how far we have come.”
