SINGAPORE — From hugging a stranger to buying an HDB flat to gorging ourselves silly eating our favourite Singaporean dishes, here are some suggestions from our favourite personalities on what to do to celebrate SG50 during the Jubilee Weekend and beyond.

41. SHANTI VERONICA PEREIRA, SEA GAMES GOLD MEDALIST. ” I like huge parties. Not clubbing parties — just one where everybody just comes together. Maybe an outdoor thing with music being played and tonnes of local food stalls and everyone just having fun.”

42. FANN WONG, ACTRESS. “SG50 means that my son Zed will also have turned one, so it’s of utmost significance for me. I’ll be flying back from Taiwan to celebrate my son’s birthday.”

43. CAROLYN KAN, JEWELLERY DESIGNER AND FOUNDER OF KEEPERS. “My family gets together to celebrate over a good meal while watching the National Day festivities on TV. I feel that at 50 years young, we are now just beginning to come of age. I see a lot more pride and support for our growing pool of local talent across all creative disciplines from music to design. I am really excited to see what Singapore’s next 50 years are going to be like.”

44. DAISY IRANI, THEATRE ACTRESS AND DIRECTOR. “It is very simple: I will celebrate National Day as I always have and always will, by giving thanks for the wonderful life Singapore has accorded me and my family. Nothing else. To me, SG50 means the hard work of the last fifty years has set up the future generations for a life of fulfilled aspirations.”

45. ROYSTON TAN, FILM-MAKER. “As I’ve been busy working on SG50 films, I plan to go for a staycation this National Day as a treat. With 50 kinds of bath foam and salts! And soak till shiok!”

46. JEAN DANKER, DJ. “I think Singaporeans should do what we do best: Go shopping and support the economy!”

47. ANTHONY CHEN, FILM-MAKER. “I will be in London on Aug 9 so I will probably gather a group of Singapore friends at my home and cook up a most Singaporean feast.”

48. JUSTIN ANG AND VERNON A (THE MUTTONS), DJS. “Our suggestion is to think of three industries and to support at least one local business from that industry. We would recommend the following: Food, retail, film, technology, service. Having run a Singapore-built food brand for the last two years (The Burger Bar), we’ve experienced the struggles and challenges of running a successful business in Singapore.”

49. ADRIAN TAN, AUTHOR OF THE TEENAGE TEXTBOOK. “I plan to spend SG50 watching my favourite Singapore movie starring my favourite Singapore actor: Forever Fever with Adrian Pang.”

50. ZOE TAY, MEDIACORP ARTISTE. “I am really, really looking forward to the National Day Parade. I had always watched the parades ... on TV as a kid and I watched the parades at the old stadium and the float at Marina Bay while my husband was flying for the Black Knights a long time ago. My husband isn’t flying but he’s in charge of the Black Knights (display) this year. He doesn’t tell me anything but I know it’s going to be something different. It’s an event that’s a must-watch even if you don’t get to watch it live.”
