SINGAPORE — Are you adventurous and have a fantastic story to tell? Well, you just might be the candidate to compete in The Amazing Race Asia, which is returning for its fifth season together with host Allan Wu after a six-year hiatus.

But what does it take to be one of the 10 teams from around the continent to race across the globe for the title and the US$100,000 (S$137,990) prize money? According to Season Five’s executive producer Jeff Lim, who was also behind two of AXN’s record-breaking series, Asia’s Got Talent and The Apprentice Asia, the series has always been known to contain crazy and unimaginable challenges. So the producers look for candidates with a fearless attitude and fun personality, he said, adding that having a positive attitude “is the key element that we are looking for in the individuals taking part in the race”. It also helps if the applicants are particularly active on social media, as being able to share their experience on the various platforms will boost their chances of being selected, Lim affirmed.

When asked about how they might stand out in their initial video auditions, he said that it is good to remember that they have to pick from thousands of videos. “The team that goes the extra mile and can do something a little crazy (for their video submission) would stand out,” he added, as would those with a really fantastic story to tell about their relationship or their reason for wanting to participate.

Lim is also particularly excited about the potential contestants from Singapore, citing their past performances as some of the reasons. “Looking at past (seasons), Singapore has won once, (came in) second place once and third place twice.”

Lim promised to give viewers a bigger, better and more exciting experience. “We certainly intend to exceed ourselves on this one” he exclaimed, stressing how he was also looking to showcase the cultural aspects of the cities they will be visiting.

And it seems social media will be a big part of their focus this season. Participating teams and Wu will be sharing their experiences across platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with updates after each episode. There will also be exclusive behind-the-scenes content produced by AXN shared across Facebook, YouTube and the network’s official website.

Lim pointed out that The Amazing Race Asia has proven that anyone can win the race, while having a good level of fitness always helps. “Knowing the show is very good if you want to be competitive; it’s always good to be familiar with the format and know the kind of challenges that have gone before,” Lim shared. He said that the winning team tends to be the one that work very well together, which is not always the case at the start of the show. “We look very closely at the dynamics of the team-mates,” he added, and it doesn’t have to be a strong relationship to start with, as contestants can use the race to mend their relationship or get to know each other better. “It’s really about the chemistry between the two individuals” Lim explained.

Interested teams can submit their videos to http://www.axn-asia.com/TARA. Online casting closes June 12 at 11.59pm Singapore time.
