Ann Kok bows out

SINGAPORE — It’s official: Ann Kok is leaving MediaCorp.

A statement released by her management read: “MediaCorp artiste Ann Kok will be taking a break from acting to pursue other interests when her contract expires this March. We are very supportive of Ann’s decision and both parties have mutually agreed to continue working together when there is a suitable project and where schedule permits. We wish Ann all the best.”

Speaking to TODAY over the phone, Kok revealed that there was a big reason behind her decision: A “top secret” new project.

“I just wanted to do something that I’m sorry I cannot reveal now. But when things are (firmed up), I will reveal more,” she said. “There are many reasons, but the main reason is this project, which has nothing to do with acting.

“This project is making me very tired because the schedule is quite tight. But don’t worry — for people who support me, I am not going to stop acting. (But) I need to do what I need to do now.”

She added: “I had some hesitation but I’m clear that I know what I want — and what I want to do. The hesitation was there, but not for very long. I am not going to sum up my career but I’ll just say, ‘Don’t worry — I’ll be back for more’.”

She also said she would remain in Singapore and would return to acting if “the right role at the right time” came along. “I’ll just take (this departure) as a break. A break is good. Maybe three months down the road, I might miss acting.”

Kok shot to stardom after becoming a finalist of Star Search 1993. In 2000, she moved to Hong Kong to pursue her career there but returned to MediaCorp in 2005. (As she will be leaving MediaCorp next month, she will not be eligible for the Top Ten Most Popular Actresses award at this year’s Star Awards, which will take place in April.)

In an earlier interview with TODAY, the 41-year-old previously stated her desire to be involved in more movies. Her debut big-screen project, Filial Party, will open in cinemas later this year. Kok is currently filming the Channel 8 drama In The Name Of Love, which is slated to air in June. May Seah
