Consumers spending more time watching MediaCorp TV: Survey

SINGAPORE – Consumers in Singapore spent the most time watching MediaCorp TV, a consumer experience study commissioned by the Media Development Authority (MDA) showed.

Last year, consumers spent 16.5 hours watching MediaCorp television programmes in a typical week, up from 16 hours in 2011. In comparison, consumers spent 4.6 hours on StarHub and 1.9 hours on SingTel mio TV.

Respondents also indicated that they were spending more time using the Internet to access media-related websites, from 6.8 hours per week in 2011 to 12.9 hours per week last year.

However, 96 per cent of the respondents said local media platforms remained the primary source of information for news and current affairs. Ninety-one per cent said they used MediaCorp TV to access Singapore news, unchanged from 2011.

More people are also turning to newspapers (from 73 per cent in 2011 to 85 per cent last year) and the Internet (from 22 per cent in 2011 to 66 per cent last year).

The survey was conducted with 1,742 respondents, comprising Singapore citizens and permanent residents, between March to May last year.

MediaCorp TV also received the highest satisfaction scores with regard to the reliability of media services in Singapore with 83.3 per cent, compared with 83.1 per cent for StarHub TV and 79.8 per cent for SingTel mio TV.

In terms of quality of media content, respondents were most satisfied with programmes on StarHub TV (81.3 per cent), followed by local newspapers (78.3 per cent) and programmes on mio TV (77.1 per cent). In terms of variety of media content, StarHub had a satisfaction index of 80.6 per cent, followed by newspapers (78.4 per cent) and mio TV (77.2 per cent).

On free-to-air television, Channel NewsAsia scored the highest in terms of satisfaction with regard to content quality and variety of locally produced programmes, with 79.1 per cent of respondents saying they were satisfied.
