SINGAPORE — Nominations for 2016’s Star Awards, the annual event that celebrates the best in the local Mandarin entertainment industry, were released today (Feb 1). In the lead was last year’s blockbuster drama The Dream Makers 2, the second season of the drama based on the ins and outs of a fictional television station. It picked up nominations in categories including Best Drama Serial, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.

For his role as a spoiled actor in The Dream Makers 2, Romeo Tan received his first Best Actor nomination in his five-year career. “I’m feeling excited and a little shocked because I never expected to be in the Best Actor category,” Tan told TODAY.

He attributed the nomination to the fortuitousness of the role. “I’d always wanted to have some special role — I had tried period dramas, extreme roles and villain roles, but never such a ‘himbo’, comedic role,” he said. “When I was playing the role, I felt very happy and I enjoyed the majority of my scenes. It was a different feeling from the roles I had portrayed before. Maybe, when you enjoy doing something, the viewers and audience can see it as well.”

Also nominated for their work in The Dream Makers 2 are Qi Yuwu (Best Actor); Zoe Tay, Jeanette Aw and Rui En (Best Actress); Zhang Zhen Huan and Edwin Goh (Best Supporting Actor); and Julie Tan (Best Supporting Actress).

Another first-time nominee is Ya Hui, who picked up a Best Actress nomination for her performance as a plain Jane wanton mee hawker in the long-running half-hour serial 118.

The actress, currently in Australia on vacation, told TODAY via text message: “I feel so blessed to have had the chance to play Hong Jinzhi in 118 and I feel so blessed to be nominated. I’m dancing on the streets of Melbourne now. Lol.”

118 has 11 nominations, putting it in third place for most number of nominations after The Dream Makers 2 and The Journey: Our Homeland (16 nominations).

This will be the 22nd year the Star Awards are being held and there will be the addition of a new category. The Best Evergreen Artiste prize will be awarded to artistes over 50 years of age, with over 25 years’ experience in the industry, who have made exceptional contributions to local entertainment, as well as for their performances in dramas telecast over the past year. The nominees this year are Chen Shu Cheng (Super Senior), Xiang Yun (Super Senior), Hong Hui Fang (Good Luck), Chen Tian Wen (118) and Lin Mei Jiao (The Journey: Our Homeland).

Another change to the awards is that the Best Variety, Best Info-Ed and Best Infotainment Host categories have been consolidated into one category, that of Best Programme Host.

Also, this will be the final year that Favourite Male and Female Characters and Favourite Onscreen Couple online awards will be given out.
