Modern Farmer’s Park Min Woo and his agricultural revolution

SINGAPORE — Korean actor Park Min-woo has always had one of those dazzling smiles, so it’s perhaps fitting that he got his fill of Vitamin D in the bright sunshine when he starred in the slapstick comedy drama Modern Farmer. In the show, which also stars Lee Hong-gi, Lee Shi-un and Kwak Dong-yun, Park and the boys play members of a rock band who are forced by their financial situation to move to the countryside and become cabbage farmers. Well, stranger things have happened in Korean drama-land, right?

SINGAPORE — Korean actor Park Min-woo has always had one of those dazzling smiles, so it’s perhaps fitting that he got his fill of Vitamin D in the bright sunshine when he starred in the slapstick comedy drama Modern Farmer. In the show, which also stars Lee Hong-gi, Lee Shi-un and Kwak Dong-yun, Park and the boys play members of a rock band who are forced by their financial situation to move to the countryside and become cabbage farmers. Well, stranger things have happened in Korean drama-land, right?

How did the Roommate and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop star take to the bucolic life of modern farming? Here’s what the 27-year-old had to say.

Q: If you had a farm and could grow anything you wanted, what would it be?

A: Well, I would love to grow watermelons, peaches and grapes. They are my favourite fruits. Wouldn’t it be nice to have plenty of them as and when you wanted? I think it is important to farm what you like in life, just like your career and hobbies. If you are happy cultivating the fruits, they will naturally be sweet, too.

Q: What was the most difficult part about having so many scenes outdoors? Did you get sunburn or heatstroke?

A: The most difficult part was the environment at the filming location. The weather was unpredictable and constantly changing. During the second half of the drama, there was a strong wind at the filming site in Bonghwa, Gyeongbuk, as it was early winter. Some of the filming equipment, like the reflector, would fly off because of the wind, and it made filming difficult. Our hair was constantly a mess; it was hard to shoot connecting scenes as well.

Q: Among your co-stars, who would make the best farmer in real life?

A: (Laughs) We talk about this on set all the time. I don’t think we would make good farmers. It is too much hard work and you need to have knowledge of the environment and weather conditions. It is not as simple as just planting the seeds, watering and harvesting. It’s science and geography, so I truly respect farmers now. Having said that, I think Hong-gi would make a stylish and modern farmer, but his fans would flock to help. (Laughs)

Q: Are you a city boy or a country boy? How at home would you be in a rural environment?

A: I would say I am a city boy. I prefer living in the city because I have lived there since I was born. Through the drama Modern Farmer, I had the opportunity to live in the countryside for the first time. And I really loved it! Because, unlike Seoul, the pace and lifestyle in the countryside is so much easier. Whenever I am stressed and need a breather, I think about going back to the countryside and spending time there again.

Q: Who’s more attractive: Outdoorsy country girls or sophisticated city girls?

A: Healthy, outdoorsy girls are definitely more attractive to me than sophisticated girls. It would be great to have a girl who could enjoy the atmosphere of freedom and outdoor activities with me.

Catch Modern Farmer starting June 24, Tuesdays to Fridays at 7.40pm on ONE (Singtel TV Ch 513 and 604; and StarHub TV Ch 124, 820 and 823).
