My awkward moment: Jesseca Liu

SINGAPORE — You can’t tell from the unflappable image she presents to the public and in the media, but Jesseca Liu is a giggler. The kind who continues laughing long after everyone else has stopped.

It happens way too many times when she’s on set, and it was no different when she was filming for the currently-airing MediaCorp TV Channel 8 drama, Blessings, in which she plays time-travelling tau sar
piah-maker Shaun Chen’s lady love.

But woe to whoever acts opposite this leggy beauty. “I’ll be looking at the other person’s face and laughing,” she elaborated. “That makes me feel really awkward because it feels like I’m not respecting the person, but I can’t control it. I’m one of those people who laughs really easily. Sometimes, during filming, I’ll laugh and laugh until other people don’t know what to do. And I’m there on my own, still laughing.”

In Blessings, there was one scene involving nearly the whole cast in which everyone was clowning around off-camera, Liu recounted. “But after everyone had stopped laughing and was ready to start filming, I was the only one who was still laughing.”

She’s giggly to the point of ruining takes, too. “Everyone is acting very seriously and I’m trying to control myself, but in the end, I still burst out laughing halfway through, and the director has to yell, ‘Cut’,” she said. “Then we’ll start over and I’ll start laughing at exactly the same point.”

And if your name is Christopher Lee, you’ll have even more laughing to deal with from Jess. “As long as I have a scene with Christopher, I’ll start laughing. He laughs too, but I’m worse,” she said. “It could be because we’ve worked together so many times that I’m most relaxed when I’m acting opposite him.”

Other victims of her LOL moments include her frequent collaborators Chen Shu Cheng and Richard Low. “So long as it’s someone I’m familiar with — and you know the person can tolerate you ... Richard is the worst because he teases me on purpose, knowing that I laugh easily,” she said.

We wonder how long everyone stands around looking at their watches while our dear girl is having a grand old time chuckling to herself. But if laughter is the best medicine, then at least she probably never holds up productions by taking medical leave.

Catch Blessings on weekdays at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 8.
