SINGAPORE - The nominees for this year’s Pesta Perdana, Suria’s biannual awards ceremony honouring the best talents in local Malay television, were announced at a media conference today (March 4).

Hosted by Suhaimi Yusof and Huda Ali, the 13th edition of the show will have a “1950s glamour” theme and, in conjunction with SG50, will celebrate the history of the Malay television industry over the past 50 years. In all, 32 awards, as well as a special Lifetime TV Achievement award, will be given out.

Among those nominated for Best Drama Actor are Ashmi Roslan (for Walimah) who was “overwhelmed and shocked” by his first Best Actor nomination in a nine-year career. “I gave myself a pat on the back because, after nine years, I get to be nominated,” he said. “It was a challenging role to play because I’m not married but I had to play someone with two kids and the marriage issues dealt with were quite sensitive. I had to do my homework so that it would look more realistic.”

As for what he thinks of his chances, he said: “The other nominees are all good actors. My chances are quite slim, but I think it’s up to luck.” His competition in that category comes in the form of Iqram Dinzly (for Kes 253), Sani Hussin (Di Luar Garisan), Sharnaaz Ahmad (Danny) and Syarif (Belah Hati).

Over in the Best Drama Actress category, the contenders are Ariati Tyeb Papar (Kes 253), Hashimah Hamidon (Mengejar Mentari), Izyan Mellyna (Walimah), Elfaeza Ul Haq and Nadiah M Din (both for Danny).

“Honestly, I didn’t expect (the nomination) because the show aired in 2013 and I had forgotten all about this drama! I was a little shocked,” said Ariati, who added that she shared the news right away with family members “who have always been supporting me and with close friends”. Her role as a police inspector in Kes 253 is a special one for her because it was “not a typical character, where you’re the housewife or the girlfriend. It was different. I enjoyed it very much”.

Over in the Best Variety Host category, Khairudin Saharom (Sinaran Hati 2013), Nurul Aini (Kita Gerek) and Syirah Jusni (POP) are up against Khairudin Samsudin, who is nominated for two show, Maintain and Te:Ra Seh!. In the public voting categories, Nurul Aini and Nadiah M Din are contending for Most Popular Female Personality along with Farhana M Noor, Mastura Ahmad and Wahyu Rahman; while those up for Most Popular Male Personality are Fir Rahman, Hisyam Hamid, Imam Shah, Norman Ishak and Syarif.

Catch Pesta Perdana 13 on March 28 at 8.30pm on MediaCorp TV Suria. For information on how to vote, visit xinmsn.com/pestaperdana.
