Six favourite canines in entertainment

1. Rin Tin Tin

1. Rin Tin Tin

The original Rin Tin Tin — not the character in the television series — was a silent film star who acted in 27 Hollywood movies. It’s rumoured that in 1929, he received the most votes for the first Academy Award for Best Actor, but was deemed ineligible. His death in 1932 led to obituaries and news bulletins that interrupted regular programming.

2. Pal

Pal was the first Collie to play the famous Lassie in the 1943 film Lassie Come Home and in six more Lassie movies. He was originally hired as a stunt double, but his performance surpassed that of the female who had been cast as the lead. After Pal retired, his descendants continued to play the character of Lassie.

3.Terry

Terry was the Cairn Terrier who played Toto in The Wizard Of Oz, for which she was paid more than most of the film’s human actors. She also appeared in 14 other films over the course of her career. Her body lies at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

4.Moose and Enzo

Moose was the Jack Russell terrier famous for playing Eddie in the sitcom Frasier, which ran from 1993 to 2004. He received more fan mail than any of his human co-stars. As he got older, his son, Enzo, helped out with the on-set duties. The duo also starred in the movie My Dog Skip, along with Frankie Muniz, Diane Lane and Kevin Bacon.

5.Buddy

Buddy was the Golden Retriever famous for playing Buddy, the basketball-playing dog, in the popular 1997 movie Air Bud. He also played Comet in the sitcom Full House.

6. Uggie

Uggie is the Jack Russell terrier who starred in Water For Elephants and stole the show in The Artist. At the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, he was awarded the Palm Dog Award. Yes, there’s an award for best canine actor.
