SINGAPORE — With 5,000 fans expected to attend, producer V Kalaiselvan, the media pioneer and 40-year industry veteran known for variety programmes such as Maalai Mathooram and Oli Oli, has his hands full prepping for the three-hour Vasantham Ponvizha Live concert tomorrow.

Hosted by Saravanan Ayyavoo, Jaynesh and Bharathi, the event will have Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the guest of honour.

“We would like to end the SG50 celebration with a big bang. And this is a big bang for our Tamil entertainment industry. I could do it next year, but it wouldn’t be the same,” he said, adding: “We have come a long way in this country, so the SG50 element will come as the very first item, so that people can see that they are living in a wonderful country.”

Talents from around the region will be coming together to celebrate with Singaporeans. Kalaiselvan’s co-producer is musician Mohamed Raffee (the first Singaporean to have worked closely with music director A R Rahman), who will lead an orchestra of more than 25 musicians from Singapore, Malaysia and India. In addition to guest performers Ranjith Govind and Chinmayi Sripada from India, the concert will feature performances by Suthasini, Kaushik, Pavithra, L Vijayandran and Vishnu Balaji.

But it is not only a music show. It will also shed light on the Vasantham television experience, Kalaiselvan said. “From day one, we didn’t want a normal concert. We wanted to incorporate the television experience. People will get a feel of how programmes are produced. We want to show how things are done in our TV industry and give them a glimpse of how people work for a TV production, and how we have evolved over the years.”

Still, music is its key offering and the audience will be treated to renditions of popular new songs as well as well-loved classics. “All the DJs are going to be there; all the top actors and actresses; all the singers. It’s a mixture of many things that will make people feel good on a Friday evening,” Kalaiselvan said. “We know that it’s just one day. But, we want to have a lot of fun and happiness on that day.”
