SINGAPORE — Mediacorp artiste Romeo Tan is a self-professed techie, so it is fortunate that his next drama, Dream Coder, is about the software development industry.

Filming has just commenced for the show, which will air in February next year and also stars fellow artistes Joanne Peh and Desmond Tan. Made with the support of Info-Communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), the series takes a look into the world of software development, and IMDA is hoping it can help shift perceptions and show that the tech career is a vibrant one.

Is there such a thing as being too tech-savvy, though? In lieu of scrolling through his phone, hacking into his laptop and stealing his cookies, we put Tan, 31, through an app-titude test.

He reveals which app he would be completely lost without and which app has extorted S$500 of his money.

Q: What is your favourite app?

A: Google Maps. When I’m driving, I always rely on Google Maps. So if Google Maps fails or my phone dies, I will get lost. Unless I’m on the PIE or AYE. If I’m on small roads, I’ll definitely get lost. And I like to use it to plan my route so I’ll know what the traffic is like and estimate what time I’ll arrive at my destination.

Q: Which app frustrates you the most?

A: Clash Royale. It’s a very popular app game you can play in real time with anyone on the planet. When I lose and my opponent puts a smiley face and says, ‘Haha, loser’, I get so agitated that I’ll go and buy credits and power up my weapons so that I can be stronger and better. Then I can say, ‘Haha, you’re a loser’ back at them. That’s really addictive. I think I’ve spent nearly S$500 on that.

Q: If you could design an app to meet a need of yours, what would it be?

A: I’d do a photography app that can be very interactive. You can zoom into any part of the picture, and then it can be a real-time image, a video of that area. I love taking photos and I think photos, other than (preserving) memories, can advance into something in the future. May Seah
