Will Carrie Wong ever escape Xu Bin and Aloysius Pang?

SINGAPORE — If each drama represents a different incarnation for an actress, then Carrie Wong seems fated to spend all her on-screen lifetimes with the same two guys.

In long-running drama 118, which is currently filming its second season, she dates Xu Bin; and for four dramas and counting, she has been coupled with Aloysius Pang. It all comes to a mind-bending head in Mediacorp TV Channel 8’s nursing-themed drama You Can Be An Angel 2, where her character is caught in a love triangle between both guys.

Why do the drama gods keep shooting Cupid’s arrows into the same three actors? Wong’s prosaic hypothesis has nothing to do with chemistry. “Maybe it’s because we just happen to have the same free dates when we are not in any other productions,” she shrugged. Uh, that is about as unromantic as it gets.

But the lack of stars in her eyes is understandable: Inevitably, everyone asks her who she would choose in real life, and yes, she is “super sick” of that question, so she deploys a stock answer: “I want both, so I’ll take one on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and the other on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. And Sunday will be my day off!”

In truth, she confided with a sheepish giggle, she does not really want either. Sorry, boys.

Do not worry, Carrie — we definitely will not ask you that tired old question. Actually, what we really want to know is how the game would play out should her love triangles have very different configurations. Let us play a “would-you-rather” game — and find out who she would choose if she were paired up with other actors. After all, variety is the spice of life, is it not?

Q: Would you rather: Elvin Ng or Romeo Tan?

A: Oh, man! I’m currently working with Romeo on Dream Coder, but I haven’t actually worked with Elvin, so I don’t know what he is like personally. I’ll choose Romeo because he knows how to make me laugh and smile. But looks-wise, maybe I’ll go for Elvin, because I think he’s SO good-looking.

Q: Would you rather: Tay Ping Hui or Terence Cao?

A: I would choose Ping Hui because I’ve had conversations with him before and he’s the type who can answer all your questions. You can ask him questions like, ‘Why is the moon up there?’ and he will give you an answer — a lot of scientific things. I like to ask questions. I asked him once, ‘What is outside the universe?’ and he answered, ‘Maybe another earth?’ I was like, ‘Wow! How come?’ So, I think I will have endless conversations with him.

Q: Would you rather: Chen Shu Cheng or Richard Low?

A: Shu Cheng because I think he’s very cute! He’s super funny. He makes jokes you wouldn’t believe. I like guys with a sense of humour. I haven’t worked with Richard before so I don’t know.

Q: Would you rather: Chua Enlai or Wang Weiliang?

A: Enlai, because of his sense of humour. I don’t know Weiliang (but) he gives me a little bit of a gangster feeling, so I prefer Enlai. I don’t like bad boys. I’ve watched Enlai’s shows before and he really can make me laugh until I’m rolling on the floor. I think he’s very talented. Why not have someone who makes me laugh every single day?

Catch You Can Be An Angel 2 starting Nov 1, weekdays at 9pm on Mediacorp TV Channel 8.
