SINGAPORE — A World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) talent scout was recently in Singapore as part of a global search for prospective superstars, the sports entertainment company revealed on Sunday (Feb 26).

In a video posted on its website, the WWE’s vice-president of talent development, Canyon Ceman, is seen attending the Unchained in Changi wrestling event by home-grown promoter Singapore Pro Wrestling (SPW) on Jan 27.

Several local wrestlers were also interviewed in the video by the WWE, including SPW’s co-founder Andruew “The Statement” Tang.

In the video, Ceman said his company is actively searching for talent from around the globe as each country and individual has its own unique background, training style and ways of expressing themselves creatively.

“The diversity of their backgrounds allow our product to be more interesting,” added the American who has been with WWE since 2012.

As the Senior Director of Talent Development, Ceman’s job includes scouting athletic talent at events including the NCAA Wrestling Championships, World’s Strongest Man competition, and the Olympic Games. The 44-year-old also oversees the company’s developmental programme, WWE NXT.

Ceman said he came to Singapore from Dubai, and was heading to Malaysia and the Philippines.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the SPW said it was “immensely proud” to have hosted WWE officials at the Unchained in Changi event.

“Attracting the eyes of the world is not our efforts alone, as we’d like to thank our supporters and our doubters for driving us to new levels of success,” the SPW said.

The SPW’s first ever full-card event, Breakthrough, was held in 2013. Other local wrestlers who have graced the SPW’s events include the tag team “Greatest Singapore Team” — consisting of Greg Glorious (Gregory Ho) and Dave Vindictus (Davin Tan) — and the Eurasian Dragon (Kenneth Thexeira).

“Sweet rewards are justly due for our five years of arduous labour,” the local promoter said. “And for the next five years, it is anyone’s guess what SPW can accomplish! Thank you and may we keep the dream alive.”
