SINGAPORE — Hours after the morning frenzy at the Nomination Centres ended, political parties began sending their representatives to apply for permits for election rally sites.

From 2pm to 4pm today (Sept 1), representatives from the People’s Action Party (PAP), Worker’s Party (WP), Singapore People’s Party (SPP) were spotted at the Police Cantonment Complex, decked in party colours, and some still bearing rolled-up party flags.

These included SPP supporters for Ms Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss, who is contesting in Mountbatten SMC, PAP grassroots volunteers for the team contesting Marine Parade GRC, and Potong Pasir SMC, and a group of WP supporters for various constituencies.

Among the Opposition party volunteers, the mood was friendly, with many exchanging greetings.

When asked when they planned to hold the rallies — which can be held from tomorrow — many of the Opposition party volunteers did not give details.

Independent candidate and political blogger Han Hui Hui, who is contesting in Radin Mas, also showed up. She did not speak to media but one of her volunteers said: “We’re hoping to see if we can hold a rally tomorrow at 7pm.”

Many appeared to be in a hurry to make the deadline for submitting applications. One group which missed the deadline was a group of PAP grassroots volunteers for Pioneer SMC. Said a volunteer: “It’s okay, we’ll come back another day.”

Earlier today, the police issued released the list of election meeting sites. Rallies will be held from tomorrow onwards to Sept 9 between 7am and 10pm. GRCs have two rally sites each and SMCs have one each.
