SINGAPORE — From tomorrow, candidates can start applying for permits to conduct post-election vehicle processions to thank voters and constituents, the police said in a release today (Aug 31).

The vehicle processions can be conducted only from Sept 12 to Sept 18 between 7am and 10pm.

Each permit costs S$50 and candidates will need to adhere to a string of conditions, including sticking to the route or area specified in the permit. The candidate issued the permit also has to be present for the procession.

Unless authorised by the officer granting the permit, singing, the playing of music and instruments, such as gongs and drums, as well as the display of banners, posters and placards are not allowed during the procession.

The vehicles should keep moving although they must not be travelling faster than 15kmh if there is anyone not seated. The procession should be conducted in a way that will not cause danger, obstruction or annoyance to other road users. In addition, there must be an insurance policy to cover any death of, or bodily injury to, any person caused by the vehicles.

Applications for the permits can be made at the Compliance Management Offices in the Police Divisional Headquarters corresponding to the electoral divisions at least one working day before the date of the vehicle procession.

These offices will be open from 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays, and closed on weekends and public holidays, including Polling Day.

Applications must be submitted at least one working day before the date of the vehicle procession.

A closed-door briefing will be conducted for candidates and election agents tomorrow at 1pm at Police Cantonment Complex.
