SINGAPORE — The Elections Department (ELD) has issued 220 Political Donation Certificates to eligible applicants, the agency said in an update today (Aug 31).

At the close of its office hours today, it also issued 35 Certificates Of The Malay Community Committee, as well as 33 Certificates of The Indian And Other Minority Communities Committee, to those eligible.

This means all who applied for the certificates were issued one. The Political Donation Certificate must be presented to the Returning Officer on Nomination Day, together with other relevant nomination documents. For those contesting in group representation constituencies (GRCs) — at least one member of a GRC must belong to a minority racial community — the minority community certificates must also be submitted. Applications for these certificates closed last Friday.

With just one day to go before Nomination Day, the ELD premises at Prinsep Link today saw a flurry of visitors from the various political parties coming by to collect the certificates.

From the People’s Action Party were Mr Christopher de Souza and Mr Alex Yam, while Mr Gerald Giam and Mr Muhamad Faisal Manap showed up for the Workers’ Party. “We expect things to run smoothly tomorrow. Preparations are in full swing (and) we expect everything to be prepared and hope nominations go smoothly tomorrow,” said Mr Giam.

Also spotted at the office were Mr Mohamad Hamim Aliyas of the Singapore People’s Party, Mr Gregory Wong of the Singaporeans First Party, Mr Kenneth Jeyaratnam and Mr Andy Zhu of the Reform Party, and the National Solidarity Party’s (NSP) Nor Lella Mardiiah Mohamed and Kevryn Lim.

Ms Han Hui Hui, who plans to contest as an independent in Radin Mas single member constituency, also came by.

Mr Hamim said his team has been very busy preparing for Nomination Day, and added that he was looking forward to a “gentleman’s fight” with the PAP’s Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC team, led by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.

Ms Nor Lella, asked about the NSP’s decision to wait until Nomination Day to reveal its candidates, said: “It’s not anything about strategy. It’s just a decision that has been made.”

Leaving the ELD, Mr Zhu, together with fellow RP candidates Darren Soh and Noraini Yunus, said as they left that they were “all ready to go”.  ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY LIYANA OTHMAN
