Residents not denied projects proposed by AHPETC, says Eunos CCC chairman

SINGAPORE — The chairman of the Eunos Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCCs) has refuted claims by the Workers’ Party’s Pritam Singh that CCCs do the People’s Action Party’s political bidding, saying it has been “working very closely” with Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) on its community projects.

In a letter to the media, Mr Sim Wai Chin also said it was wrong for AHPETC to claim that because Community Improvement Projects Committee (CIPC) funds come under CCC control, residents were denied projects that they should rightly benefit from.

Mr Sim was responding to Mr Singh’s account of his experience as Member of Parliament for the Eunos division of Aljunied GRC at the WP rally at Punggol East yesterday (Sept 5). Mr Singh was calling for an overhaul of how grassroots organisations are structured.

CCCs, which come under the People’s Association’s purview and are funded by it, oversee the other grassroots organisations in each ward. Mr Singh pointed out that 17 out of 50 improvement projects proposed by AHPETC have been approved “after 18 months of trying”, but work has not started.

Mr Sim said from last August to March this year, it has consulted AHPETC “numerous” times, including nine meetings and site visits, and through emails. “In fact, a public tender for works to be carried out for these 17 projects was called and closed in May this year, and will be awarded,” he said.

He also said CCCs also had to raise funds for CIPC projects, which require time and effort. “The AHPETC’s proposals account for 12 out of these 17 projects — more than two-thirds. All 17 projects, including the other five projects proposed by the CCCs, are being implemented at the same time,” he said.

He added: “At the end of the day, what is important is that our residents’ needs are taken care of.”
