SINGAPORE — The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) today (Aug 27) introduced two more candidates, including one new face, for the coming General Election.

The party’s new face, former civil servant Sidek Mallek, 55, is a compliance auditor with a security company and began helping the party in 2011.

The other candidate introduced today was party vice-chairman John Tan Liang Joo, a psychology lecturer with Murdoch University at Kaplan Singapore. Mr Tan, 54, contested as part of a five-member SDP team in Sembawang in 2011, winning 36.1 per cent of the votes.

Both candidates were introduced by SDP central executive committee member Jufrie Mahmood and party member and candidate Paul Tambyah, who was unveiled yesterday.

Mr Tan advocated a minimum wage to narrow the income gap and provide the poor with a “decent living beyond mere sustenance”. He also said current education policies do not provide the choices to stimulate creativity in children.

The father of three children aged 18 to 26 said in his biography that he is disturbed by the sense of powerlessness felt by some Singaporeans with whom he has interacted, as expressed through phrases such as “what to do” or “no choice, what”.

“People can only feel empowered when they have a choice, and when they have the ability to voice or exercise that choice,” he noted.
