8 things to do at night in Singapore

SINGAPORE — As Singapore Night Festival couldn’t have demonstrated it any better, night-time activities do not have to be kept to late-night movies, KTV sessions or supping at the hawker centre.

SINGAPORE — As Singapore Night Festival couldn’t have demonstrated it any better, night-time activities do not have to be kept to late-night movies, KTV sessions or supping at the hawker centre.

When the sun goes down, there are still several other after-dark activities you can get up to. And television host Desmond Ng, who co-hosts Mediacorp Channel 8’s variety show Bengpire, is definitely someone who knows where the fun stuff is at.

“Bengpire is about two vampires who are (kind of) Ah Beng,” he explained. “We go around at night and explore different places for fun and food.”

Ng, who hosts Bengpire alongside Wang Weiliang, pointed out that “there are many places Singaporeans don’t know about”, and the show enables them to introduce these spots to the audience. “We got the chance to go there to have fun — play for free, eat for free,” Ng quipped.

He helps us put together a list of late-night haunts night owls can enjoy:

LASERTAG

At Combat Skirmish Singapore, participants run around Fort Siloso, Sentosa, armed with a laser gun. The objective? Hit their opponents, while attempting to dodge their attacks. Ng says taking part in a night assault mission makes the game tons more exhilarating. “At night, you can’t really see where your opponent is,” Ng said, and “this makes you feel more ‘gan chiong’”, as participants have to manoeuvre and find their way around in the dark. That’s way more fun than when you can see everything during the day, he added. A session usually starts from 6.30pm and lasts about two hours. Bookings have to be made one week in advance. More information is found at www.combatlasersingapore.com.

DARTS BAR

Hone your aiming skills at the Forest2 Darts bar located at Shenton House (3 Shenton Way), which opens until 1am, on Mondays to Thursdays, and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The sports bar provides electronic Dartslive soft-tip dartboards. For those seeking a challenge or who prefer the traditional style of darts, there are also steel-tip dartboards provided. Ng shared that this activity can be enjoyed by both family and friends. “You can play while enjoying drinks and food over conversations as well,” he added. More information is available at www.forestdarts.com.sg.

GO-KARTING

You might be an expert driver at arcade game Daytona, but how would you fare when put in an actual race? At The Karting Arena, you can attempt to be a racecar driver extraordinaire and pit your driving skills against your friends. Describing Go-Kart racing as a “rip-roaring activity”, Ng said that the advantage of racing at night is that it won’t feel as hot (while driving at night). Plus, “the tracks that light up at night remind me of Formula 1 and make me feel like a racer”, he added. The karting arena is located at 200 Turf Club Rd, #01-01B The Grandstand and is open until 10pm. Closed on Mondays. Find more information at www.thekartingarena.com.

PRAWNING

Supper can’t be more satisfying when you are able to catch your own grub. At places such as East Coast and Punggol which are open 24 hours, you can rent a rod to catch your own prawns — and then barbeque them later. Besides that sense of achievement you feel when you snag a prawn, this activity also lets you bond with friends and family during the waiting game. Call 6227 3330 (for East Coast Prawning) or 6447 8693 (for Hai Bin Punggol).

GET PAMPERED

Rule Of Thumb spa at Beach Road opens until 4am, so your body can get some much-needed rejuvenation in the middle of the night. Services include manicures and pedicures, body massages, scrubs, foot rubs and facials. It even provides a la carte services such as cupping, guasha and eyebrow trimming. Located at #01-01, 289 Beach Road. Visit www.ruleofthumb.sg or call 6295 5000.

GLOW BOWLING

While most associate disco lights and heart-thumping music with clubbing, glow bowling proves that you do not need booze and a dance floor to have fun. Orchid Bowl’s Cosmic Nite Promotion is a glow-in-the-dark bowling activity, where participants are treated to glowing balls, pins and party music. Its bowling alleys have 24 lanes, which means more people can join in. It is available at Orchid Bowl @ The Chevrons, every Friday and Saturday, from 7pm to closing, and Safra Yishun, Safra Tampines and E!hub every Friday and Saturday, from 10pm to closing. Changi Resort Bowl also offers the option of cosmic bowling during public holidays from 10pm to closing, while J Forte Sportainment Centre holds a cosmic bowling session every Saturday from 10pm to 12am.

ESCAPE ROOM

Use your wits and brains to solve puzzles as you attempt to make your escape from a locked room. Escape games, which throw you and your friends into a themed environment where you must uncover mysteries and solve clues to find your way out, are fast catching on here. Trapped, which is located at *Scape, is open until 2am and boasts a wide selection of themes, such as World War Z (Apocalyptic), Friday The 13th (Horror) and Avengers (Fantasy) to choose from. Bookings have to be made by 10pm for games after 11pm. More information at www.trapped.sg.

REVERSE BUNGY

This is just the post-dinner thrill for adrenaline junkies. At the G-MAX Reverse Bungy at Clarke Quay, get buckled into seats in a metallic structure attached to two straps and scream your heart out as you are hurled into the sky to an astounding height of 60m. Take in Singapore’s night-life scene if you can while experiencing a G-force similar to what astronauts feel in a rocket launch. Each ride lasts five minutes. For those seeking more thrills, try the GX-5 Extreme Swing. Seating five people in each ride vehicle, the capsule is pulled upwards to a near 90-degree angle, with the riders facing downwards, before it is released like a huge swing. What better way to round off an exciting night? Opens until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
