BMW tips its hat to the 2002 Turbo

BMW’s Hommage cars have always been heavily body-kitted — occasionally outlandish — design studies that pay tribute to iconic cars from the Bavarian manufacturer’s past. The latest Hommage car, the recently unveiled BMW 2002 Hommage, marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of the 02 series of compact sedans and pays tribute to the 2002 Turbo, which sat at the top of the 02 range.

The latest Hommage car, the recently unveiled BMW 2002 Hommage, marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of the 02 series of compact sedans and pays tribute to the 2002 Turbo, which sat at the top of the 02 range.

Why does the marque care so much about the 2002 Turbo? For starters, it was the first turbocharged car in Europe to enter series production, placing its powerplant at the forefront of engine development for BMW. Turbo technology would eventually become one of the cornerstones of BMW’s motorsports success, from sportscar racing to Formula 1. The engine also bestowed the 2002 Turbo with bona fide sports-car performance.

Other elements on the 2002 Hommage — like the tri-colour front spoiler, flared wheelarches housing 20-inch wheels and horizontal carbon band that brings to mind the original car’s chrome trim — point towards a modern interpretation of a classic coupe. Scott Marsh
