E-Class debuts in Singapore

Singapore — Mercedes-Benz launched the 10th generation of its boss-mobile, the E-Class, here on Thursday. According to Wolfgang Huppenbauer, president and CEO, Daimler South-East Asia, the E-Class is the car maker’s best-selling model here, so it has some big shoes to fill.

To keep it ahead of the game in a very competitive segment, Mercedes-Benz has pulled out all the stops, launching a car that is packed with safety-centric technology and creature comforts.

The launch model here, the E200, is equipped with a 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine producing 184hp and 300Nm of torque. Available in Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line trim levels, launch prices start from S$264,888, including COE.

DRIVER ASSISTS

One of the bugbears of driving a boss-mobile is probably being forced to give tight parking spots a miss, due to the difficulty in alighting from a relatively large vehicle. Mercedes-Benz’s Remote Parking Pilot system can help with this as it allows owners to park their cars with a smartphone app. While the system is not available in Singapore, it is just one example of the amount of technology the car maker has invested in the new E-Class. Other features like Active Brake Assist warns drivers of possible collisions and can autonomously apply the brakes and Attention Assist, which can warn drivers if it senses they are sleepy or inattentive behind the wheel.

The goal behind such systems? Helping Mercedes-Benz achieve their vision of “accident-free and autonomous driving” according to Huppenbauer.

These are part of a slew of driver-assist systems on the car, so it perhaps is no wonder that Huppenbauer describes the new E-Class as a pretty smart ride.

“Mercedes-Benz is taking a big step into the future with the new E-Class, which we think is one of the most intelligent executive saloons around,” the 62-year-old said.
