Singapore — Meet the third-generation Lexus IS. It’s completely new, but the extroverted styling (which features cues from the LFA supercar) is what’ll really draw eyeballs. Especially with the F Sport edition shown here that gets a bodykit and 18-inch dark alloy wheels, it looks ready to raise hell. But this is the IS 300h — ‘h’ indicating that it’s actually the range-topping petrol-electric hybrid model.

How does it drive?
An optimised 181bhp 2.5-litre inline four is mated with a 143bhp electric motor, although the result is less powerful than it sounds, since the system is more of an efficiency enhancer than a performance booster. It’s heavier than the standard IS 250 (which packs a V6) so feels less lithe, but also cossets the driver with smooth, untroubled pace. It’s brisk in acceleration, but not fast, and rewards you at the pumps: Lexus quotes 20km/l, and 16km/l can be easily done in real life.
Why should I buy one?
It offers a decently sporty drive and is packed to the gills with equipment, yet it’s also terribly efficient and clean — emitting only 117g/km of CO2, which is barely more than a Toyota Prius. Its looks and behaviour are a little bit paradoxical, but perfect for those who want to look fast, yet live clean. Derryn Wong
