Audi Q5

It’s getting long in the tooth now, but the Audi is still competitive. The interior has dated well and still feels modern and expensive, and the powerful S Q5 version is a hoot to drive. It rockets to 100kmh in just 5.1s.

Porsche Macan

There’s little room in the back, but the Porsche is a blast behind the wheel. It’s unruffled by mid-corner bumps, and stays faithfully on any line the driver chooses, with uber precise steering and terrific balance. It’s the gold standard for drivers.

Lexus RX 400h

BMW X3

The X3 is under threat somewhat by its own sibling, the X1, which is not that much smaller on the inside. But the X3 does drive better than that car (as well as the larger X5), and a cut-price model with two wheel-drive is available.
