Subtle variation

Singapore — If you look at the current craze for sports utility vehicles or crossovers, the phrase: “I’m a rugged individualist — just like everyone else” comes to mind.

Singapore — If you look at the current craze for sports utility vehicles or crossovers, the phrase: “I’m a rugged individualist — just like everyone else” comes to mind.

So what’s a stand-out to do if they want something with lots of practicality — but not something Mr Tan down the road also drives?

The good news is, station wagons are now officially cool, if the current run of models is anything to go by. Cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake and Mini Clubman offer lots of style paired with estate practicality.

AND THE KITCHEN SINK AS WELL

Volkswagen’s Golf Variant is the latest variation on that riff: It’s the wagon version of the brand’s popular, all-conquering Golf hatchback.

With a massive 605-litre boot, it offers a huge 225-litre increase to boot space over the hatchback. In fact, it can stow more cargo than the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and if you flip the seats down with the handy remote handles, it will fit 1,620-litres of cargo.

Suffice to say, if you can’t fit it in the Variant, it’s probably best to get a professional mover — or risk a hernia.

This additional usefulness comes at a small price, however. Since the Golf Variant is heavier, it’s marginally less efficient than the hatchback, consuming 0.2 litres more petrol per 100km and emitting 4g/km more. It is also 31cm longer, meaning you have to park more carefully.

GOLF-NESS TO THE FORE

Nonetheless, the car’s inherent “Golf-ness” hasn’t changed much: It’s still very efficient overall and handles slow city work or more dynamic driving with ease.

Since this is the jazzed-up R Line model, it has a more aggressive body kit, special 18-inch wheels, sport suspension and the requisite chrome roof rails for a slender silhouette.

Drivers who really want to go faster should look at the 150bhp Golf R-Line hatch or the similarly-priced Hyundai i40 Wagon, but if you are looking for a Golf that’s more practical, this wagon offers just the kind of variation to do it.
