SINGAPORE - Better known for his flamboyant personality and style, British designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is now injecting his flair into Singaporean homes with a range of sofas he has designed for furniture giant, Courts.

The collection was launched earlier today (May 26), and Llewelyn-Bowen, who’s also the head judge of reality TV show The Apartment cited Singapore’s shophouses, dazzling nightlife and in particular, the colourful Perankan households, as inspirations that have translated to certain designs and fabrics used in the 14 sofas and two armchairs in this range. These include The Glamour sofa set, with its opulent fabric combination in a clean, contemporary silhouette. He has also created a special SG50 Cocktail Sofa that he described as his “homage to Singapore” — inspired by how sophisticated and glamorous Singapore has become in the last 50 years.

“There’s an energy and modernity here that I feel Singaporeans should be really proud of,” said Llewelyn-Bowen.

The Laurence Collection is the furniture brand’s first designer collaboration, which Courts Singapore CEO Terry O’Connor described as a “breakthrough” due to its luxe for less philosophy and affordable pricing. Prices range from S$1,999 tp S$2,950 for a three-seater sofa. The collection has also been specially designed to fit Singaporean homes.

“The sofas are Singapore-sized — they fit well into our apartments and into HDB lifts. It’s also been designed for humid Singapore living,” said Courts regional furniture director Steve Church.

For Llewelyn-Bowen, the idea of seeing his creations in Singaporean homes is a dream come true. “I’m enormously proud of what we achieved. I’ve always wanted to created practical designs that can be bought by as many people as possible, to give the designer experience to the mass market,” he added. “I feel Singaporeans are very value-savvy and they can definitely see how we’re giving more value with these sofas.”

Courts will be retailing the Laurence Collection for Courts alongside the House of Laurence accessories at a special concept corner in its Megastore in Tampines. This collection is the second high profile launch from the company, following the roll-out of its Your Bedding service last Friday, where customers can choose to customise their beds from mattress to headboards. It will also be unveiling its tie-ups with American tool and hardware Ace Hardware as well as is Danish furniture firm JYSK by September this year.
