Fashion’s new It kids

NEW YORK — It may seem as if Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Lily-Rose Depp, Brooklyn Beckham and Georgia May Jagger only recently swept onto the fashion scene, but a new group of celebrities’ children is already rising through the ranks. They are as young as 14 and no older than 23, have thousands and sometimes millions of Instagram followers and have appeared in campaigns and shows for the likes of Chanel, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Stella McCartney.

Call them Generation Celebrity Spawn (Generation CS). They were famous initially because of their parents — household names in music, film and modelling such as Jude Law, Cindy Crawford, Lauryn Hill, Lionel Richie, Pamela Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis, to name a few — and the luck of their genes. But they are smart enough to realise that with a bit of social media effort, they could parlay that start into a career where they are paid to mostly just be themselves. They are ascending quickly and are unlikely to go anywhere soon.

Here is a field guide to Generation CS, ordered by the size of their Instagram followings as of Oct 18.

Richie, who landed a modelling contract in 2014, has appeared in editorials for Elle, Vogue China, Nylon and Vanity Fair China, and was the face of Madonna’s and Lourdes Leon’s Material Girl autumn 2015 collection.

Gerber made her modelling debut for a major brand: Young Versace. Since then, she has appeared in campaigns for Alexander Wang and Miu Miu, and covered Vogue Paris with Crawford. Earlier this month, Marc Jacobs announced that Gerber would be the new face of the company’s beauty line.

Ming Lee Simmons, 16, and Aoki Lee Simmons, 14

The sisters’ big modelling gig was being featured together in the resort 2017 lookbook for their mum’s label, Kimora Lee Simmons. Both girls have been familiar with the sewing machine for years, according to an interview they gave to OK! Magazine. “We know how to drape and design our own clothes,” Ming said. “We make our own stuff.”

In February, Lee appeared in a video for Saint Laurent ahead of the brand’s show in Los Angeles. A few months later, Lee, who is represented by Next Model Management, earned a feature in Nylon magazine. Still, he said: “I’m building a brand for myself. I never really wanted to pursue modelling. I just naturally fell into it.”

Marley, who started at New York University this fall, walked in Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 show, appeared in a feature in Vogue called “100 Way to Wear Gucci” and stars in Calvin Klein’s fall campaign. She was also in Proenza Schouler’s pre-fall campaign film and in a spread in CR Fashion Book 9. Like many of her celebrity-kid peers, she has been interviewed by Teen Vogue.
