JAR’D BY SARNIES

(B1-38 Tower 1 One Raffles Place)

So this is not the cheapest option on the list, but it could be the hippest, with its range of salads served in a Mason jar. The logic is that the clever layering helps keep the meal as good as when it was first packed, starting with the dressing and protein, followed by everything else in the middle, and the greens on top. There are four meals to choose from, priced from S$12 for a 750ml jar of the Vegan Zoodle Pad Thai, made with zucchini noodles dressed in a sesame dressing. There is also the
Tuna Tataki Salad, one with quinoa and feta, and another featuring roast chicken and pesto.

LIVING WHOLESOME VEGETARIAN FOOD

(Bukit Timah Food And Market Centre, 51 Upper Bukit Timah Road #02-188)

Opened three years ago, this humble little purveyor of the famously healthy thunder tea rice has quickly garnered a long line of fans. And while the idea of a rice meal, packed with healthful herbs, legumes and vegetables and served with green tea, may sound like an acquired taste, diners here will say this option is surprisingly flavourful, while the bitterness of the tea is tempered with a variety of nuts. Best of all, prices start from as low as S$5 for a small portion and S$6 for the standard serving.

CEDELE BAKERY-CAFE

A popular quick fix here often involves a sandwich, created with a variety of breads made fresh every day. How does Graham chia seed bread sound? There are naturally wholesome soups — including gluten-free options — and well-thought-out salads made with notably healthful ingredients, from grilled tofu and pumpkin seeds to quinoa and edamame. And because needs and tastes vary regularly, there is also the option to create your own salad. Some of its house-made dressings boast 50 per cent less fat. Prices start at S$9.90 for a selection of vegetables and one protein. At Cedele Raffles City and Novena. Call to check for other outlets.

SUNMOON FRESH

(1 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-24 Tanjong Pagar Plaza)

You may mistake this chain for a fruit shop — and it is. But at S$4.90 to S$6.90 per bowl, it also serves some of the most reasonably priced salads — not to mention a uniquely wide variety of fruit toppings — outside of a food court or hawker centre.

REAL FOOD

Driven by a seemingly humble desire to create good, ethical and healthy food, this little organic cafe now has several outlets and has also expanded into Malaysia. All the outlets serve organic vegetarian fare — it is the speciality. And while the menus differ slightly, you can get a Classic Greens salad with avocado for S$8.50. Its bestseller at the Square 2 outlet, though, is a salad of orange, apple and pumpkin priced at S$12.80.
