Best Things Under S$10: 938LIVE’s Angela Lim

SINGAPORE — Other than dishing out food-related tidbits on 938LIVE’s youth talk-show, Campus, radio DJ Angela Lim also helms Nightcap, a 9pm-to-midnight shift. That often leaves her with enough time to grab a quick fix of hearty murtabak or maggi goreng with a milo dinosaur from her favourite prata haunts: The RK House at Serangoon Gardens, Thasevi Famous Jalan Kayu Prata Restaurant and The Roti Prata House on Upper Thomson Road.

Along with her midnight food pursuits, the 25-year-old finds herself indulging in the comfort of local food. “Hawker fare never fails me. There are so many amazing local dishes to choose from, such as sambal stingray and bak chor mee,” she said, listing Old Airport Road Food Centre, Chinatown Market and Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market as some of her go-to hawker centres.

While she’s “pretty adventurous” when it comes to food (fried tarantulas in Cambodia, anyone?) Lim does tread back to the familiar — often seeking solace in a bowl of XO version fish bee hoon soup, along with her other favourite food, which range from fresh sashimi and salted caramel desserts to “anything spicy or smothered in coconut milk”.

> BREAKFAST: Kaya toast with soft-boiled eggs and kopi (S$2 to S$5) from Chin Mee Chin Confectionery, 204 East Coast Road. This is the classic Singaporean breakfast. Simple, delicious and it never gets old. Chin Mee Chin does kaya toast with round buns toasted perfectly, and the kaya is not too sweet. The coffee there is also pretty decent. I love the old-school, traditional feel of the coffee shop.

> LUNCH: Bak chor mee (S$4 to S$8) from Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles, 466 Crawford Lane. It’s one of my favourite food for lunch because it instantly gives me that lard-filled carb fix, smothered in lots of chilli. The Tai Hwa version is great for those who love their bak chor mee with a generous splash of vinegar; the noodles are also perfectly cooked with a generous helping of minced pork, liver and wonton and just the right amount of chilli. This stall gets so popular that many customers opt for the S$8 bowl after waiting in line!

> DESSERT/SNACK: Ice cream with waffles or apple pie (S$4 to S$8) from Island Creamery, Serene Centre. I like the local flavours it offers, like Teh Tarik, Milo Ping Pong, Cendol, Bandung and Pulut Hitam. CHRISTIE YEO
