Best Things under S$10 with Michelle Chia

SINGAPORE — It has been some time since we’ve set eyes on Michelle Chia on TV, but the popular presenter is set to return to our living rooms in a big way. There’s the all-new game show, Silence!, which she will be presenting with Adrian Pang in October. The innovative Japanese-gameshow-inspired production will feature contestants performing a series of tasks as silently as possible for the chance to win the grand prize of S$10,000.

In addition, the 38-year-old — who is apparently a major chowhound — has been busy filming the fifth season of Makan Places, the food TV magazine show she co-hosts with Gurmit Singh. Unabashedly admitting that food is the sole motivation for her to get out of bed every morning, it’s no wonder that Chia loves the show, in which she gets to “find out more good makan places that I can add to my list of ‘where to eat’”, she said.

As for her favourite dish, Chia said: “Roasted meat! Gurmit and I almost finished a whole suckling pig and a plate of assorted roasted meat. For breakfast!”

But one thing that she simply can’t live without is one of the timeless classics of Singaporean dishes. “Laksa, laksa and laksa,” she said, “It’s my all-time favourite.”

>BREAKFAST: Chwee kueh at Shunfu market (4 pieces for S$1). The kueh is exceptionally soft and melts in your mouth. The chai po is fried in slightly bigger chunks rather than minced. Chilli is also very tasty, not overpowering.

>LUNCH: Duck noodles (S$3.50) at the cross junction of Seng Poh Road and Eng Hoon Road. Succulent duck meat and great sauce with perfectly cooked noodles. Their self-made chilli goes really well with the dish, which I think is a must-have with the noodles.

>DINNER: Laksa (S$5) at Newton Circus, facing the carpark. The soup is cooked to perfect creaminess and flavour. The cockles are always fresh. LAETITIA WONG
