Best Things Under S$10: Warrick Wee

SINGAPORE — For winning the 987TV Star competition, Warrick Wee was presented with a grand prize of S$5,000, a one-year contract with 987TV and a HTC Desire 816 mobile phone. But if he had his way, the finance and accounting major admitted that he wouldn’t mind an extension of the contract.

“I grew up with 987FM. I have this radio that I bought when I was 12 and it has never been tuned (to any other station),” he said. “Twelve years ago, it was on 987FM, and 12 years later, it’s still on the same frequency!”

Wee showed his down-to-earth yet charismatic charm when we asked him to share kitchen anecdotes.

“While I was studying in Berlin last year, food was much more expensive and I was forced to learn cooking. The dish I’m most proud of is rosti, a Swiss potato pancake,” said Wee. “I was so good at flipping the rosti that I’d flip it more than 10 times. I was so good at it, I shouted to my friend to take a video of me. Just as he started recording, I flipped it and the whole pancake flew out of the pan. I still laugh every time I watch the video.”

BREAKFAST: I think I’m super “uncle”. I love eating kaya toast with butter and half-boiled eggs (S$4). The only not so “uncle” thing about me is that I would change the drink to milo instead of kopi-o. Usually any shop works for me, but if I were to choose, perhaps it’d be Ya Kun, because it is really generous with the butter.

LUNCH: Possibly the beef hor fun (S$4) at Amoy Street food centre. Cheap and good, the portion is amazing. It’s so huge, it never fails to take me into a deep post-lunch coma. So if you have problems falling asleep, this is the meal to go for. And you would be glad to know the beef is more than the hor fun, that’s for sure. If you smile at the aunty, she’ll give you more beef.

DINNER: I would say the power nasi lemak at Boon Lay Place Market and Food Centre, #01-06. The fried chicken is the best. Somehow, the flesh is just so succulent and the skin so crispy. I love the chilli as well, as it’s not extremely spicy and tastes amazing with the rice. The best thing about it is that even if you order a set with extra chicken, it’s probably going to cost at most S$5. Laetitia Wong
