YES 93.3FM DJ Siau Jiahui doesn’t mind sharing food

SINGAPORE — When it comes to dining, Y.E.S. 93.3FM DJ Siau Jiahui doesn’t mind splurging once in a while. Her greatest extravagance was a S$300 meal at Gunther’s Restaurant. “The meal was so satisfying! I love the cold angel hair pasta with Oscietra caviar!”

That she loves her food doesn’t come as a shock to those who tune in to her weekday radio programme, Lunch Rules; but Jiahui doesn’t limit herself to fine dining, gushing about the food at Plaza Singapura. “I love the Indonesian barbecue and grill, and the fish steamboat stalls,” she said. “But I cannot forget the sashimi at Aoki Restaurant at Shaw Centre, it was so good and fresh, I could practically taste the ocean!”

There’s good reason she doesn’t indulge every whim. “The more you suppress, the more you crave for it and the more you are going to eat when the opportunity arises. So I say, just eat whatever you want, but it’s a must to control the intake,” she said. “Take five mouthfuls of laksa instead of one big bowl to satisfy your craving, and then pass the rest to your friends. I’ve been very disciplined, and don’t feel guilty for making friends fat!”

>BREAKFAST: Bak Chor Mee at Sin Kian Heng. It’s at Block 226, #01-26, Ang Mo Kio Street 22. The noodles are al dente, with a good blend of sauces. The soup is savoury-sweet, obviously from using lots of ingredients. I see red dates and wolfberries in the stock too! S$3 for a satisfying breakfast.

>LUNCH: Boiled soup at Xu Yang Tonic Soup at Block 728 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6. It is a healthy choice with no MSG. The stall has been mentioned in various newspapers and magazines in the past few decades for its superior soup quality. My frequent choices would be watercress soup, old cucumber and Sichuan vegetable. The soups taste lighter compared to those from franchised soup stalls and you can have them for every meal without feeling that the soup is too rich. It’s less than S$5 including a bowl of white rice, depending on the type of soup you choose.

>DINNER: Ayam panggang (grilled chicken) set at Riverside Indonesian BBQ at Plaza Singapura Kopitiam. It’s the best Indonesian grilled food in a Singapore food court. For less than S$7, you get a huge grilled chicken thigh with savoury gravy, rice and omelette and a small bowl of soup. Every friend whom I have recommended the stall to loves the food. One set meal keeps you full for a very long time! And I say, top up the set with vegetables for more nutrition. LAETITIA WONG
