If dad’s problem with cakes stems solely from an aversion for all things sweet and sugary, here is a surprise alternative from an unlikely source. Antoinette chef-patissier Pang Kok Keong’s solution is a savoury layered cake dubbed The Nordic (S$48), inspired by the traditional smorgastarta. The first layer is a blend of tomato marmalade with cream cheese mascarpone Chantilly slathered over smoked salmon. The second layer is filled with tomato marmalade and prawn cocktail, while the third features an egg mayonnaise with tomato marmalade. The cake is then covered in cream cheese mascarpone Chantilly and garnished with smoked salmon, prawns, pickled cucumber, red radish, green and yellow zucchini, capers, shallot rings, herbs and micro cress and curried crumble. NOT THE USUAL CHOCOLATE TREAT

Tired of the usual chocolate mousse cake? Or maybe daddy has a thing for tropical flavours. Well, as unfamiliar as it sounds, Cedele’s German Chocolate Cake (S$58.0) is a that delightfully sweet-salty combination of rich chocolatey bliss finished with coconut cream cheese frosting, topped with dried coconut. The fact that it is made with grapeseed oil and unrefined sugar is a boon in the wholesome department. But remind him that it is not an invitation to wolf down half of it on his own. Available at all Cedele outlets.

SWEET ON SWEETS

If he digs his dessert and is not afraid to show it, these playfully decorated artisan cupcakes (S$6 each) from Gourmet Carousel will go down well. For example, the Honey, I’m Home, topped with a fondant moustache is really a toasted brioche cupcake with figs, manuka honey, mascarpone cheese and polenta. The Super Dad cupcake, dressed in a short and tie, is packed with muesli with All-Bran, soya milk and dried fruits. The Chocolat Papa-Mia, on the other hand, is the straight-up rich chocolate ganache variety filled with shaved chocolate.
