KUALA LUMPUR — Having slurped, chowed and tasted 1,365 types of instant noodles from every part of the world, The Ramen Rater has picked Malaysia’s MyKuali’s Penang White Curry Noodle as the No 1 instant noodles of the year.

The blog, run by an American dedicated to instant noodles, named the Penang curry noodles in its Top 10 Instant Noodles Of All Time 2014 list at http://www.theramenrater.com, where it was described as having a “strong curry flavour and a hearty finish”, while the noodles were “not too wide or too narrow, with a chewiness that is perfection”.

Its extremely spicy broth was also rated No 7 in the blog’s 2013 list of Spiciest Instant Noodles.

Malaysia had another entry on this year’s list of best instant noodles, with Mamee’s Chef Curry Laksa Flavour in seventh place. The blogger described it as a pleasant surprise because of the brand’s “mi tarik” technology, which he said produced the “same texture as hand-pulled noodles”.

Commending Mamee’s broth, he said it featured a “beautiful hint of cumin and comes with small bits of tofu puff as garnish”.

Singapore took second and third spots with Prima Taste’s Singapore Laksa La Mian and Singapore Curry La Mian, and again at No 8 with the Singapore Chilli Crab La Mian, a brothless variety from the same brand with a sweet sauce and a spicy, buttery taste.

South Korean instant noodles also took three spots on the list.

Samyang Foods’ Maesaengyitangmyun Baked Noodle came in at No 5 — a mouthful to pronounce, but said to be delectable — for smelling like bread and having broth that tasted like “gomtang”, a traditional Korean beef soup.

Paldo’s Cheese Noodle from South Korea was No 6 as, besides its cheesy taste, it also had a rich and spicy flavour.

Nongshim’s Soon Veggie Noodle Soup, which is targeted at vegetarians, was No 9.

Japan, the birthplace of instant noodles, had only one entry on the list, Sapporo Ichiban’s Otafuku Okonomi Sauce Yakisoba at No 4.

The noodles are garnished with green laver, or flaked seaweed, and also feature a little mayonnaise packet and Otofuku, a famous brand of yakisoba, or fried buckwheat, sauce.

Thailand’s Mama Instant Noodles Yentafo Tom Yum Mohfai Flavour took the last spot for its seasoned brown noodles and the flavour of hoisin, or Chinese plum, sauce and chillies.

The Washington-based blogger, Mr Hans Lienesch, said he has enjoyed instant noodles from childhood and has since pursued his love for them. Online retailers, distributors and instant noodle corporations have sent him samples for reviews.

“People often ask me, ‘Doesn’t it get boring eating the same instant noodles all the time?’ I wouldn’t know — I eat a different one every day,” he said. THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
