This Round’s On Mike Kasem

SINGAPORE — Describing the Class 95FM DJ is easy: He’s one cheeky and cheesy entertainer. The Irish-Lebanese 40-year-old is full of whacky stories about partying hard with A-listers as a television host in the United States before his move to Singapore. Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Colin Farrell and Fred Durst — he used to have some “great times” with them.

“I remember going with Britney to record a song with Nelly, who was producing it, called Tilt Ya Head Back. After we got into the car, she asked me what I thought, and I told her that I loved it and it brought a nice edge to her otherwise pop sound,” Kasem said. “She decided not to use it. Nelly ended up using Christina Aguilera for it. The cool thing is, I still have the Britney version, as she left it in my car.”

But what about the time he went clubbing with Britney and Christina? “The manager asked (Britney and I) if we minded sharing our table. Britney asked ‘Who with?’ and he replied ‘Christian Slater.’ So while Christian and I were having a great conversation, in walks Christina Aguilera. Mind you, this was back during their feud. Christina ignored us, looked straight at Britney and pointed at her with a snarl on her face. Christian and I got a bit worried. She climbed over us, grabbed Britney, and gave her about a minute of a beautiful french kiss. I wish smart phones were what they are today.”

Currently, Kasem’s working on a show for Toggle called Project Woof. “It’s so much fun to shoot, and I can’t wait for it to air. Jean and I are also focusing on Cartunes on Class 95FM and we’re very excited about what we are going to bring to the show in the coming months.”

Q: So, what’s the drink to have at the end of a long work day?

A: If I go for a drink at the end of the day, which means 9pm (laughs), I will have a glass of red or white with dinner. Or a glass of beer if I’m hanging out with pals or throwing darts, snooker, pool, etc.

Q: What’s your most memorable food and drink pairing?

A: It would have to be in Napa Valley when one of the chateaus put together a five-course meal with all the wines paired for about 30 of my friends. It started out as a classy evening and turned into loud music, regurgitation and blackouts.

Q: Have you ever tried picking a lady up in a bar?

A: I’m not the guy who gets the girls in the bar. Girls want to hook up with the other guy for one night and settle down with me.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing experience under the influence of alcohol?

A: I was hanging out in a bar at Bukit Timah about 15 years ago. I went to the bathroom but because I was so drunk, it was all going onto my pants and not the urinal.

Q: How about the sexiest pickup line you’ve heard in a bar?

A: Nobody uses actual pick-up lines in a bar. That’s just what you see on TV. You just try to talk to women. I tried a reverse situation once. I went up to a super hot girl and I said: “Hey, my name’s Mike, what’s yours?” “Holly.” “Hey Holly, what kind of car do you drive?” “An old beat-up Mustang.” “Oh, I thought you had potential ... Forget it.” Then I walked away and she started to laugh so hard with her friend. So I came back and we had a good chat because she thought that was so clever. Laetitia Wong
