Singapore to be Gelato World Tour’s first stop in Asia

SINGAPORE — If there was any doubt that people here love their gelato, it should be dispelled by this recent announcement: Organisers of the much-anticipated international Gelato World Tour are bringing this notable celebration to Singapore next year. It will be the first of its kind to be held in Asia — after taking Europe, North America, Middle East and Oceania by storm.

The event, which aims to highlight the art of gelato-making and its growing culture in the region, will take place from March 20 to 22 at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. Visitors can look forward to lessons and workshops on the age-old art of making gelato from Italian experts. Artisan gelato chefs will also present their creations — 16 flavours from Singapore and Asia-Pacific countries — and the three winning flavours will be selected to compete for the title of the world’s best gelato, to be held at a later date in Rimini, Italy. Details of the competition can be found at http://www.gelatoworldtour.com.

“Gelato is more than a typical dessert; though its luxurious texture may intuitively suggest otherwise, gelato is freshly made every day in a way that means it is significantly lower in calories and sugar than other ice cream (boasting around half the fat content of typical industrial ice cream),” said Valentina Righi, vice-president of the Bruto and Poerio Carpigiani Foundation.

He added that culinary students could also look forward to the opening of the official campus of the Carpigiani Gelato University in Singapore next year. The campus will be located at the At-Sunrice culinary school and is set to be the hub for Asia-Pacific countries, “making Singapore the gelato capital of Asia”.

Achille Sassoli, director of the Gelato World Tour, said: “This city’s excellence and creativity in diverse food experiences, healthy lifestyle, artistic culture and desire for high-quality locally-sourced food ingredients make it the perfect choice for our first competition in Asia. We are extremely excited to start the second edition of the Gelato World Tour in Singapore and look forward to introducing Asians to this indulgent yet healthy delicacy.”

Singapore is also set to mark another first when it hosts the very first Gelato Charity Dinner organised in Asia. World-class chefs and an instructor from the Carpigiani Gelato University will work together to surprise diners with innovative sweet and savoury flavours.

Admission to the Gelato World Tour event is free — money collected from visitors for the tasting portions will go directly to charity. Don Mendoza
