Illumi Nation: Lighting up the night

SINGAPORE — With the large number of club parties throughout the year, how does one raise the game of Singapore’s party scene?

For Jeffrey Foo, it means holding Asia’s largest glow-in-the-dark neon paint party: Illumi Nation at Siloso Beach. He has assured us it’d be nothing less than “stylo-milo” spectacular. “Eight specially customised paint cannons, with paint coming out in a giant splash: Neon pink, yellow, orange and green!” he exclaimed, emphasising his plans to colour up the night on Oct 11.

“We’ve imported more than 2,000 litres of glow-paint, having invested probably about a million dollars just to produce this event,” said the 44-year-old. “It’s a nine-hour (long) party, starting at 6pm, and (there are) activities like body painting and graffiti artists using the luminous paint to create canvas paintings. We want to be the first in Asia to do something like this.”

Having gleaned inspiration from his previous success with Illumi Run, a party infusing glow paint, EDM music and a 5km marathon, Foo said Illumi Nation fulfils the promise of “losing yourself by becoming one with the light”. “Rather than create an atmosphere for people to party, we want them to become the event itself,” he explained. “And that’s how we see it. The paint will be a medium to unite everyone. The young generation no longer wants to take part in events. They want to be the event.”

Illumi Nation also boasts an impresive line-up of acid-house DJs, with big names such as the popular French DJ Martin Solveig headlining the party with his electro-house; as well as The Bingo Players, Dada Life, Made In June and the boys from Rave Republic. “Of course, we had a wishlist of DJs and Martin Solveig was someone Singaporean party-goers were more familiar with,” said Foo, who confessed that he had to fork out a six-figure fee for each of the DJs. “The DJs have different styles and we wanted to diversify in case it gets too boring. You have to understand that in this part of the world, we still don’t have the first options when it comes to selecting DJs. In North America and Europe, dance festivals are very established, whereas it’s only peaking in Asia. During their summer, top headliners are already snapped up and it doesn’t give us much of an option.”

Nonetheless, Foo said this year’s Illumi Nation is the beginning of a three-year plan and he is determined to make the party one of the biggest yearly bashes in Asia. He also has plans to expand into 20 cities in a span of 36 months, including Shanghai, Sydney, Melbourne and perhaps Perth. “It’s a done deal that we’re going to bring Illumi Nation back in 2015,” said Foo. “We are going to deliver such an experience to people ... a premium experience at a new level of partying, anchoring Illumi Nation as the massive glow-in-the-dark paint party of the year.”

Illumi Nation happens on Oct 11 at Siloso Beach, 6pm. Tickets from S$98, available at www.illumination.asia
