While cliff jumping is something some people would never think to do, for others the activity is highly appealing. But the danger associated with the sport has earned it the nickname “tombstoning”. Yet whether you’re throwing yourself into the abyss to get your adrenaline pumping, or whether it’s some sort of rite of passage, this is, hands-down, the original rollercoaster.
South Point Cliffs, The Big Island, Hawaii
Hawaii is a great cliff diving destination because of its tropical climate and numerous volcanic cliff banks. Reportedly, during the reign of the Hawaiian King Kahekili in the 1770s, cliff diving was a means for men to prove their courage and loyalty. These days, people head there simply to enjoy the gorgeous views and warm waters.
Kamari Beach, Santorini, Greece
More than just a locale to enjoy a pretty sunset, there are many reasons to tempt fate on the coast of Santorini Island. A great example is Kamari Beach, where there’s a 10m high rock wall that offers an exhilarating jump into the ocean. It is also deep enough, that it is safe for beginners. Some other cliffs on the island can be found among the famed black sand beaches.
Brontallo, Switzerland
Switzerland is surprisingly one of the most well-noted cliff diving destinations in the world, and the most thrilling 24m-high cliff-diving opportunities are found in Brontallo. The little town close to the border of Italy has hosted several World High Diving Federation championships, despite the freezing water temperatures.
Wolfgangsee, Austria
This lake in north-western Austria is calm and clear, making it a popular location for diving. One of the best spots here is the Falkenstein cliff wall in Furberg Bay, where divers can spring off a special high board about 30m above the water. This is also the site of the annual Red Bull Cliff Diving competition.
La Quebrada Cliff, Mexico
This cliff is one of the most dangerous diving spots in the world because it’s all about timing. Basically, if you don’t jump at exactly the right moment, you might end up splattered all over the jagged shore. If you’re not as confident, just take a seat on an Acapulco restaurant terrace and watch other divers soar off the spectacular 44m cliff. Jeremy Gopalan
