Fashion and lifestyle blogger Aimee Song: What she wears depends on her mood.

SINGAPORE — She burst onto the fashion scene in 2008 with her blog, Song Of Style, and Aimee Song quickly made a name for herself as one of the most inspiring fashion and lifestyle bloggers around.

The 26-year-old said she constantly updates her style sense. “My style is always changing, I just become a different person. I mean, no one wants to be the exact same person they were five years ago. They want to improve.” she said. “So I try to bring in a little more lifestyle (to my blog), because that’s what my readers like. They want to know what skin care products I use, what workout I do, what I eat and all that.”

Having an astoundingly toned body, without having to work very hard for it, doesn’t hurt her popularity either. “I don’t do that much exercise, actually!” she laughed. “Maybe once a week, or once every other week, I’ll try to do soul-cycling or flywheel. Or yoga. I do hot yoga with a friend maybe once a week, but I’m really bad at it because I don’t have time. Travelling’s terrible, because I’ve been eating so much in Singapore!”

Q: What are the top fashion staples every woman needs in her closet?

A: Boyfriend jeans, leather pants, a leather jacket, lots of statement jewellery or jewellery that you can wear every day — because you can be wearing a basic T-shirt and over-accessorise or put a statement necklace and that makes it different, right? A nice pair of shoes, like high-heel sandals, because I feel everyone can wear them and it works with everything from skinny jeans to skirts. And espadrilles for summer. I’ve got so many clothes, but most of the time I’m, like, “I have nothing to wear!”

Q: What are the latest fashion trends that everyone should take note of?

A: I think great silhouettes are very important. Oversized shirts and neoprenes are still big, I think. Also, be mindful of great prints. Basically I think it’s just making any outfit into your own and accessorising it. You could just be wearing a simple graphic tee, but if you accessorise it very well, it can be cool. If it were me, I’ll wear a really oversized graphic tee with a short skirt and make it my own.

Q: Are there any style phases you regret?

A: Back in the day, I would buy knockoff ACNE boots from Jeffery Campbell. Now when I look back, it probably wasn’t a good move. Back then, I couldn’t afford ACNE, so I bought the affordable version instead. But now when I look back, I think about how offensive it must have been to the designer. So if I’m buying something on a more affordable scale I won’t buy the knockoff but rather the inspired-by or one with a different twist.

Q: What influences your stylish dressing?

A: It depends on my mood. If I’m in a crappy mood and I want to feel better about myself, I’ll wear colour. The rest depends on the occasion. If I have a meeting, I’ll dress for that meeting. Obviously I care about what people think of me and my outfits. If I said I didn’t care, I would be lying. If I didn’t care, I would just wear sweatpants and not even wear makeup at all. So I try to be mindful, but then again, that’s not going to affect the choices I make because it’s my life and not theirs.

Q: Do you believe in breaking the bank to be fashionable?

A: No! Absolutely not! I feel that you don’t need a lot of money to stylish. I actually feel that the more money you have and the more available things are, you’re less thoughtful about your fashion choices. But when you’re on a budget, you’re more mindful of it and you find more creative ways to be stylish. The most important is to always be confident about what you wear. Fit is everything.
